Our Lady of the Annunciation Grotto
About us
Our Lady of the Annunciation Grotto (OLA Grotto), is a Marian Shrine located in the Savannah Region of Ghana. Ecclesiastically it is in the Catholic Diocese of Damongo, under the Maryrs of Uganda Parish, Bole. The creation of the Sanctuary is in response to the demand of the catholic faithful within the diocese to have a Marian Shrine or a spiritual pilgrim center where Christian can go for spiritual nourishment and a fruitful encounter with God. This desire of the faith which manifested in their movement to other Marian Shrines within the country and their explicit request finally came to a realization in the wake of the year of faith called by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, in 2013. The year of faith which span from October 2012- November 2013, was a moment for the church to reflect on her faith journey and to looking concrete means to creating, sustaining and deepening the faith of the Christian faithful.
The local church of Damongo did not forfeit this opportunity, but sets committees to enquire for the deeper yearning of the people. This enquiry reconfirmed the desire of many of the faithful to devotions and more particularly devotions to Our Lady, the Blessed Virgin Marian. It also came out that despite the importance of these pilgrimages to other parts of the country where Marian Shrines are located, many faithful who desired to visit are not able to do so based on economic factors as well as the distance involved.
To assist the faithful in this regard of deepening and nourishing their faith through the devotion to our Lady, the Virgin Mary, the Our Lady of Annunciation Grotto, at Sonyor was established and inaugurated as a holy ground for devotion and a sanctuary by the bishop of the diocese Most Rev. Peter Paul Y. Angkyier on 31st October 2013.
